Effects of Covid on our Interiors .

HHaving lived a whole year through a world pandemic, as human beings we’ve all undergone significant changes. This in turn has had a huge impact on our environment and in particular our interiors.

We are now spending more time working from home and have more leisure time at home, so we’ve been reflecting on where we live and what we surround ourselves with.

I have made some observations on the main effects of COVID-19 to our homes.

CLEANING

We have been constantly advised to be more vigilant to wash our hands regularly, wipe down surfaces and overall cleanliness is in the spotlight. So having a bathroom, powder room or sanitary station located very close to the front door or entry point to your home has become paramount.

DE CLUTTERING

There’s been a surge for clearing out all the things we don’t need and de cluttering. Concentrating on bringing in only what you really love into your home, will help to keep the clutter to a minimum. The old adage of “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful” by William Morris really rings true now.

COCOONING

We need to create calmer and softer interiors, so lots of soft furnishings such as cushions, rugs, throw rugs and even curtains have become more in demand. I have also seen more demand for custom goods over mass produced goods in order to limit what will eventually end up in landfill.

THE ROLE OF AN INTERIOR DESIGNER

Interior designers do much more than just picking lovely things to put into a space. Our role really has come into the spotlight as now more than ever people are needing to ensure they make the most of their spaces and using clever design with materials and layout to really enhance the enjoyment of your home. I also see it as therapeutic, as we need to have a feel or sense of wellbeing in our homes.

An interior designer can get out of your head the vision you have for your spaces and create something that is totally unique. What is important to someone may not be so for another. Creating a space that makes you go “ahhh” will have a knock on effect to your overall wellbeing and acts as a safe haven from the outside world
